Sturman chair

This partially upholstered walnut chair was made to replace an ugly alternative for someone who is still active but who has some mobility issues and who wanted something with a high straight back and a short seat she could rise easily from.  While there is a whole industry connected with furniture designed around particular medical needs, very little of it is good-looking and even less of it gladdens the heart.  I don’t see why age, injury or illness should mean forgetting style or delight.

Unglued

The client’s request was for a coffee table made with no artificial additives – no glue, no varnish, no fancy modern oils; just pure old-fashioned joinery.  It was a brilliant challenge, and made all the more rewarding because the single long burr oak board I made it from was so beautiful to work with.  1180 x 600 x 460.

Wood Store

I also store and sell small amounts of hardwood timber, all of it sourced locally.  I needed a space where boards could be air-dried properly and this is the result.  The posts were milled from two oaks which came down after a storm in the woods nearby, I cut the joints and bracings, the steels were second-hand and my design was directed as much by the materials and the curl of the hill as by the shed’s intended function.

Often, people want a piece of furniture to fit a particular need or space - they've just moved house and their old desk / kitchen table / bed doesn't fit, or they've had a bit of timber knocking about for years which they'd love to have turned into something personal. If you've got a project you want to discuss then email me, and we'll work something out.
